Are there any settings in this novel which you have found to be beautiful? or disturbing? or memorable? Describe these settings and comment on why they were meaningful to you.

Beds were disturbing setting. At first, animals were not allowed to sleep on the bed but later, pigs are sleeping on the beds. Also, animals could not use human’s property but pigs have changed their commandments and they used Jones’ things. Bed and human property shows us that once we get the power and control others, then we want another things from the world. As we are getting power, people’s personality becomes greedy and selfish. First, they wanted to make a fair world but the pigs wanted more comfortable and good one. Usage of beds is related to commandments’ change. Animals start to realize something is going on in pigs’ plan. So, this setting is disturbing and also meaningful. Bed’s usage sheds light on changes between minds. Windmill is meaningful setting because it forms plot and tension between people and animals. Windmill makes many conflicts. Animals are having good relationship with humans. But people ruined animals’ windmill that is made by their hard work. This part shows us betray again. At first, windmill was the cause of Snowball and Napoleon’s fight. They started fight because of the windmill problem. Windmill is also obstacle for the Snowball and the other pigs’ relationship. When the windmill has collapsed, Napoleon starts making rumors about Snowball. Napoleon says that Snowball has ruined the windmill because Snowball had make team with the other farm’s owner. But actually, it is not true at all. Windmill also uses as one step for new Animalism for pigs. Beds and Windmill are related to the theme that is about power and selfish mind that is in people.

Last sentence of the book was meaningful to me because last sentence has come with great turn around and it has metaphor in it. The sentence is “The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.” Metaphor in novel is that George Orwell expresses pig as a human. Especially, I like the part that says: “but already it was impossible to say which was which.” Because this part can contain many meanings such as the pigs’ appearances are same as human, their classes in the world like lower class or higher class and pig is having same intelligence as human. Usually, people are saying that the difference between human and animal is thinking ability. We think that animal cannot think but in this case, lower class has over their class and has become same group as a human. I think this passage also reveals symbol about power. Once someone gets power and uses it, then he or she wants to get more power but he or she does not want to give up the power. The reason why I think in this way is because Napoleon has pushed animals to death by using his power. Boxer had to die to maintain Napoleon’s power. So, Napoleon sent him to horse slaughterer. Napoleon is same as Stalin in Russian society. Stalin makes team with Germany; German is same as people in this story and Snowball is Trotsky who has pushed by Napoleon. By this sentence, I could make sure that power is the thing that cannot easily have given up by the one.

What is the mood of this novel? Do you find this novel saddens you in any way? Why?

I do not know that it can be the mood or not but when I think of this novel’s mood, always my first word is betrayal. The world for someone who does not know what is going on between pigs is hard workers’ world; the world for pigs is materialism world. The seven commandments are keeping changing as the time goes to satisfy Napoleon’s effects. Napoleon has forced out Snowball from the farm because Snowball was the obstacle for maintaining Napoleon’s power. Once, Snowball and Napoleon were comrades but Napoleon forced Snowball out with his selfish mind. So, Napoleon gets the reputation from the animals. This part has astonished me when I compared to my life. If there is betray between the animals then between the people, there will be another betray. Friend is person who I love but if they betray me, it is same as losing my hope. Therefore, Betrayal finally leads animals into desperation. As the betrayal mood is going on, animal farm is having more hard time than ever. Rebellion against the people was also has come from betrayal mood because the animals have betrayed their owner. Hard workers’ world at first gives animal peaceful and joyful mood but as the time passes; they are getting harder time than whomever in the farm because they are too pure to understand so they just suffer hardship without understanding what is going on, exactly. So, joyful, peaceful and harmonious mood is disappearing with betrayals. The materialism world is symbol of pig’s authority. Pig’s power makes up the scary, violent and rainy mood. The mood that came from materialism world is the saddest mood in this story because originally pigs were clever but they have become fool to the love in the world. Pigs are losing their love in their heart to get their authority. This novel is exciting but this novel’s mood and scene are sorrowful things.

What is the climax of this novel? What happens? How do the events of this novel make you feel?

I think the climax is the final step Napoleon took to betray the whole Animalism and the farm. At first, animals were saying, "Four legs good, and two legs bad." but at the end of the book (climax), animals are saying, "Four legs good, and two legs better." Therefore, animal also creates lower classes and upper classes which segregates them. Napoleon has made one team with people. So, animal farm has abolished. As Napoleon formed a team, Pigs are having same reputation as human. Therefore, we could not even say which is human and which pigs are. Of course, this novel made me feel bad because at first, their purpose of making animal farm was to make better world without their owner. But at time elapses, their first purpose was gone and pigs were taking time to get their power. Like ‘Lord of the Flies’, this novel shed Russian Rebellion and also our real world between leaders. Lighting our society by showing the usage of power was the saddest part in this book. At first, the usage of pigs’ power was for all of the animals but pigs started use their power as their weapon. Pigs’ power was only to protect them. Therefore, pigs were having enough food and nutrition but the other animals were only working hard and starving to the death. And this situation was one of the steps to create new Animalism which is good for Napoleon and pigs. Climax is the result of person’s egoistic mind. Finally, person’s self-centered mind led citizens to the death or unhappiness. It shows how the egoistic mind comes to the last so, it was unhappy to read about it.

The main characters in the novel are Snowball, Squealer, Napoleon, and Boxer. Snowball, Squealer, and Napoleon are the pigs in the animal farm. Napoleon and Snowball are two leaders in the animal farm but Napoleon pushes away Snowball. Squealer is one of the pigs who go along with Napoleon. Boxer is the cart horse who works hard in the animal farm and dies for maintenance of Napoleon’s power.

-Why or why not? -What is special about them?

Because they could not find solution for their problems and they are so fool. They do not think about the plan for their peaceful life. Napoleon is only thinking about his own life. Squealer thinks that Napoleon is always right and does not know what is wrong and right. Boxer thinks that he can just live hard with his effort and does not care about what is righteous thing for animal’s sociable life. Snowball knows what is right but he goes away with rumors that has made by his rival and he does not come back. I do not like Napoleon because he is being selfish; I do not like Squealer because he does not think about what is good for his team; Boxer is too stupid because he helps his teams with his strength but not with his brain and Snowball is the stupidest one in this novel because he knows what is right and wrong but he does not come back to the animal farm; and does not teach what is right and what the animals should be working on.

Napoleon is Joseph Stalin who is the demagogue in our world. Snow ball is Neon Trotsky who was the one of the leaders with Stalin. Boxer reveals medium high classes and who works hard for our world.

-Are there are any current situations in the world that relate to the novel?

Yes, this story is the retelling version of Russian Rebellion. And I think this story can be related to Korea and U.S.A, too. Actually, this story can be applied to any story that is related to the power in the world.



-What are they, and how do they relate?

The purpose of writing this book was let people know about Russian Rebellion. So, Snowball is Trotsky who has pushed out by Stalin. And Stalin is Napoleon in this story. Boxer is one of the citizens who work hard. People like Pilkington and Mr. Jones are Germans. By this story, George Orwell has blamed Soviet Union society. This story also can be related to North Korea’s situation. In North Korea, who live with enough nutrition are only politicians or upper classes, otherwise the others are starving to death. Politicians and upper classes are people who have power only care about them. In this story, Napoleon and the other pigs have made theory like this: “All animals are equal but some animals are more equal than others.” This theory is come from their selfish mind and it is similar situation as pigs’ society. If South Korea sends money or food for North Korea, then the upper classes use it for themselves, not for the poor people in their country. So, they are doing same thing as the pigs have done.

No, actually not. Because Napoleon took the steps to create new Animalism as time passes. At last, he finally has stepped on the last step for the new Animalism and it has succeeded. Therefore, there was not any resolution for the problems. Napoleon’s well planned aim has succeeded in natural mood because he advanced his plan smoothly that is not so going fast and also not so going slow. If Snowball was alive in the Animal Farm, then there might be resolution for the animals.

What is the major theme of this novel? Why is this theme important to a teenager living in 2007?

The major theme of this novel is all about power. The theme that comes out from my mind is ‘You must control your usage of your power and look forward to use it for our peace-loving world.’ In this story, the animals’ first purpose of their life was gone and each of the pigs was looking for what they need. The pigs were being selfish in a way to get power. And because of the pigs’ selfish beings, the other horses, goats and animals get starvation and face many conflicts. You must use your power for the other’s comfortable life; otherwise power would ruin your life. Power is for leader and the leader must be the person who leads people to harmonious world. This book says that the leader like Napoleon who is demagogue will abolish the society. Thus, choose your leader wisely. And the leader should be look forward to peace-loving world and care about others first other than about self.

I want a teenager living in 2007 to make the other world from this animal farm. I do not want this situation to happen again. I want them to create world without evil minded people. The author wrote this book with same mind as mine. George Orwell has written this to shed light on Russian Revolution but actually he wanted to teach young people to get lessons from this novel. Teenager who lives in 2007 needs ability to decide right decision. And the leader should be wise and not selfish. The leader on the earth should love everyone and self, too. Loving mind will give the leader the right choices to lead the world.

I could not hear any news about you in the ending of the book. Now I am wondering how you are doing right now. I have said word "now" a lot. I think you should always live with your best wishes because you were not helping others to get your own benefit. Have you ever read Tuesday with Morrie or The Present? As soon as I get those two books, I will send it to you with one more letter. Tuesday with Morrie might teach you how to live your life with your best wishes. This book is mainly talk about the last day of life. I think you should live your life as the last day. The reason why I am suggesting you to live your life as your last day is because you excuse a lot to kill the pigs and play. You excused a lot with your selfish heart and you disturbed the boys to get their destination. Living your everyday as your last day would make you to get everything done by your planned day. You thought that you do not need fire for rescuing. But actually you really needed it for your life going on. Do not just live for your joy; watch your future's dream. Therefore, you should make the best decisions that you need for your future. The present is the book that will give you tips about how you can live a better life. One of the quotes says "Present is not the Past or Future. The Present is The Present Moment. The Present is right now." Therefore, I am telling you to live your life with love and passion.I know that you had hard time on sailing and staying in an uninhabited island.

Most memorable settings to me were that they were staying in uninhabited island and castle. Uninhabited Island is the land that people always scared about so it makes up the thrilled mood. Uninhabited Island is that land contains 0 people in the land. Therefore, the boys were creating new world with their evil or good human natures. The boys have finally burned the island with their cruelty. These settings were not only memorable, castle was disturbing. Castle makes cloudiness mood with making them fearful.Staying in uninhabited island is also beautiful because as I mentioned before, I can make my own world with my individual character.An uninhabited island is memorable to me because it could be compared with planet Earth because Earth is also the creation that has been made by people. Therefore, setting shows that the novel Lord of the Flies has deep relationship with our real world. Earth and an uninhabited island were both, in the beginning, pure. Pure land has polluted or has changed for beautiful land. However, human nature is changing purity. Usually, those changes are polluting the land because of human’s selfish hearts. This novel made me to regret in many ways. I have regretted that I was being so rude to the earth. Earth should be protected by human who lives on the land but actually human does not feel thankful for the earth. And we do not also feel the beauty of the earth. So, from now on we should protect earth with our heated heart and we should also feel the thankful for the land that we live on.

"I've got the conch. Ralph thinks you're cowards, running away from the boar and the beast. And that's not all." This passage was meaningful to me because Piggy always says that a lot to Jack. This passage shows me that there is person who always refuses to follow rules like antagonist. Usually the writer mentions important thing in indirect ways. But in this situation, writer used Piggy's saying as a direct words. Piggy shows us the possibility that the beast would not exist. "I have got the conch." saddens me because there is rule around them but they do not even willing to follow the rule. "Ralph thinks .. " this part shows Piggy's personality very well because he says "Someone thinks" rather than "I think". The reason why I think this quote reveals Piggy’s personality is because he was weak in front of powerful person. I think "And that's not all" part suggests us that more scary and thrilling experiences will come in front of them. Therefore, it can be foresight about killing each other. The boys were cowards so they tried to avoid the Lord of the Flies and they also killed Simon and Piggy with their fear. Jack is destructive, selfish human beings who would destroy others to get what we want. But no one mentioned it before but Piggy is saying it to others. So, the author is trying to show Jack's evil nature by this quote. However, nobody has paid attention to Piggy so no one has noticed that Jack was leading the boys to dark world. This quote supports part of the theme well in direct ways.

-The mood of this novel is dark, cloudiness and violent. Conflicts between the boys make dark and cloudiness mood because their conflicts show the dark side of the world.
-Yes. I find this novel saddens me. It makes me to regret about my bad behaviors. Momentary wrong decisions could lead our world to dark side. It also saddens me because the novel shows our feckless world very well. I felt like I am watching News about the war between Iraq and U.S. War is coming with disharmony of each nation’s opinion. Therefore, we should appreciate another’s voice and try to make them happy with your persuading. “There is not any impossible in the world.” So, understanding and caring can always make people’s harmony sound. As I have mentioned a lot before, the purity of the Earth has polluted by the human on the land. By writing this sentence, I feel pity on the people again because we are not only being rude to the thankful land Earth; we are also being violent to the God. God has created Earth for his beautiful sons and daughters. And people are saying that they believe in God. So they are even making sins and praying. God is gracious so he will always forgive us but we should not always make sinful crimes by believing that. My conclusion is that we have to care our earth with our best wishes. After I finished this novel, I prayed for the peaceful world to not become world like that in the novel.

Climax: Simon faces the beast in the forest and somehow he realizes that the Lord of the flies is not real beast and it's just fear around them. Simon uses the Lord of the flies as weapon to approach the boys but the boys thinks Simon is the Lord of the flies. Therefore, the boys kill Simon.

These events make me feel the dark side of our world. The boys have been fighting with each other and they think they are brave because they killed pig. But actually in their mind, there was fear in them. Fear between them makes them to go wrong way of their way. What I have realized about this fear is that I should act like person who I like to be because they were being so cruel to each other and I do not want to be person like that. Maybe the person who I like to be can have evil nature instead of good. However, I want to be protagonist for our world’s peaceful life. Once Simon realized that the Lord of the Flies is not real, but he could not let the boys know the truth and finally Simon has died by the boys’ cruelty. To survive and to make good world, I should make myself strong and I should make others to believe me because in hardships, I have to persuade them in right ways. After I’ve read the climax part, I also felt that I need to develop my ability to pick right choices.

The main characters are Ralph, Jack, Simon, Piggy and Lord of the flies.
Ralph is the chief in their adventure and Jack is the other chief who againsts Ralph to be the chief. Simon is one of the followers of Ralph. Piggy represents inteligent person in our life. Lord of the flies is the creature from people's fear even though, it doesn't exist.

Do you like them?

I only like Ralph, Simon and Piggy. I do not like Jack and Lord of the flies.
The reason why I do not like Jack and Lord of the flies is because their personality or existence wasn’t essential part for our life. Their existence was disturbing for the boys’ destination.

Why or why not?

I do not like Jack and Lord of the flies because they couldn't help people and their influence disturbed people's adventure.
I like Ralph, Simon and Piggy because they participated a lot for their adventure and they
tried their best for rescue. Ralph was the chief who helped people to be rescued. Simon supported their team with his spiritual strength. Piggy also supported their team with his intellectual strength.

What is special about them?

They are special because they represent the people who live in the world.

What do they reveal about the universal human experience?

Ralph reveals champion or supporter like protagonist who wants to keep the peaceful world.
Simon reveals good person who supports leader to make good community.
Jack reveals evil man like Dr. Hwang (who lied to people for his own authority). He is antagonist so he is enemy or opponent for our world.
These sentences show us that they are just normal people in our natural world.

Yes, in the world there are lots of current situations like in the novel. Current situations are usually related with main character’s human nature.

What are they, and how do they relate?

In the world, there are people who help others, follow the law, and be peaceful. But also there are people who are destructive, selfish human beings who would destroy others to get what they want (Theme). This theme is related to Dr.Hwang's situation. He told an untruth people to get his authority so we can say he was being selfish to get what he wanted. Dr.Hwang (Hwang Woo Suk) did not follow the rule and was being rude for his own benefit. He played trick on people with animal’s life and also he said he found the new thing for the first time in the world. However, people followed him before that the truth approached us. (Similar situation with Jack) Doctors are also example of current situations in the novel because they help others to make peaceful world. Doctors who have kind nature could be considered as Ralph.

I do not think the novel showed us how to fix the problems. The reason why I think that he did not show us how to solve the problems is because they could not made peaceful world before the boys have rescued by the adults. Maybe just slipping out of the troublesome situations and do not joining into those situations could be the solutions. But no one could have slipped out those dangerous, annoying, and needless situations in the novel. Following wrong choice of human nature made them to fight. However, before the save boat has come, the boys could not solve the problems. Therefore, actually there were not any solutions that the author was giving us.

What is the magior theme of this novel? Why is this theme important to a teenager living in 2007?

Golding probes the human nature in this novel--within us there are both good and evil natures. On one side, we want to help others, follow the law, and be peaceful. But on the other side, we are destructive, selfish human beings who would destroy others to get what we want. In the novel, boys land in the remote island where it is almost like the "Garden of Eden." At first, they get along very well and love the fact that there are no adults to constrict their freedom. But as time passes, the evil within us surface, and the boys turn into savages. Perhaps Golding is saying that if humans are not educated and strive to achieve order, we are inherently destructive and selfish. This theme is important to teenagers living in 2007 because if they are not careful, the dark side within them will surface and turn them into savages like the boys in the story. Golding might want to criticize about the war. The time when he has written this book is close to World War II. Therefore, I am thinking that he wanted to use this theme as way to criticize the World War II. This story is mentioning about the war and also philosophy, too. But not that deep in philosophy, the story only matches with outline of philosophy. The theme could be related to many realities in variety ways. The theme that Golding said about human’s nature like evil, good and savagery things also could be related to God’s word because he always saves us from sins.
